The Expert Tutor is a tool that you will use when doing one of the Development Activities called the EQ Workout.
Why a workout? In several of the preparation articles the point was made that new behaviors need to be practised repeatedly in order for them to become established. Repetition allows new pathways to be formed in the brain. This ensures that behaviors become established, mastered and automated. It is key in progressing from conscious incompetence (I know what I must do but struggle to do it) to unconscious competence (where I know what I must do and can do it easily easily and naturally).
The big challenge with development though, is how to get from knowledge to practical application of that knowledge. Only repeated practical application of knowledge will ensure that the knowledge is transformed into a skill.
As you will see in the next module, Recommended Readings are one of the development activities that you will be provided with. These readings expose you to new knowledge while using the Expert Tutor as part of your EQ Workout will help you to transform it into a skill.
We will not discuss the Expert Tutor in depth here because we do so under EQ Workout in Module 3. It is enough to know that it consists of an Excel spreadsheet which will challenge and stretch you with activities related to any Recommended Readings you do.
For example, let's say that Allison has very high dominance which invariably means poor listening skills. One of her Recommended Readings will be Active Listening. Reading articles on Active Listening will introduce her to new information on listening that she didn't have before. Using the Expert Tutor will however "lock her" into a process whereby she will be challenged to workout how she can apply Active Listening in the workplace, practise her Active Listening Skills and improve on them.
Doing the EQ Workout with the Expert Tutor will not be necessary for all your development dimensions. However, if it is one of the Recommended Development Actions in an Expert Guide, then you are strongly encouraged to use the Expert Tutor to do the EQ Workout.
