Imagine someone like Allison who is highly qualified and experienced but who displays some or many of the following counterproductive behaviors stemming from her personality:

  • Distrust
  • Dominance
  • Insensitivity
  • Over - controlling
  • Unfriendly
  • Lack of Empathy
  • Unable to Engage
  • Lack of Rapport
  • Hypercritical
  • Poor Interpersonal Insight
  • Lack of Transparency
  • Manipulation
  • Self - important
  • Attention seeking
  • Tactless

These counterproductive behaviors will undoubtedly derail her as a leader. If leaders fail in leading people, they fail as leaders. The hallmark of good leadership is to be able to get things done through people, the ability to bring out the best in people as well the ability to inspire and motivate others to work towards common goals.

A common problem is the fact that most people who find themselves in leadership/managerial roles have been promoted into those positions out of functional or technical roles. Usually they will have had years of education in fields relating to their area of specialisation such as finance, quality, engineering, HR or commerce, but little or no training in leadership or working with people. Even so, it is assumed that they will be successful in leading others.

While it is true that some people have a natural gift for leadership, this is not true for most. Journey 2 therefore addresses the question of working with people. Based on your personality you will be able to see what your strengths and weaknesses are in this critical area of Leadership.
