PREPARATION SUMMARY
In preparation for your this developmental journey, so far the following key points were covered:
1. We argued that Emotional Intelligence is a rich topic that cannot be understood in a few sentences. In a nutshell though, it is all about being self - aware and using emotional information about ourselves and others to guide our thinking and behavior.
Armed with this awareness and emotional information, we can learn to respond more intelligently to people and situations, rather than react to them or fall back on default ways of dealing with them which may be counterproductive.
We indicated that you will be dealing with 16 personality dimensions that impact on EQ. These 16 dimensions have been divided into 3 journeys as follows:
- Journey 1: Self Regulation
- Journey 2: Working with people
- Journey 3: Managing Tasks
2. We then looked at the business case for EQ. The study done by Six Seconds provided compelling evidence that EQ impacts more strongly on leadership effectiveness and organisational performance than any other human factor.
3. Next we discussed the critical topic of self - awareness. We argued that the things we are unaware of control us, that self awareness is the hallmark of emotional intelligence and that self awareness comes with practise, not through reading a book or taking a seminar.
We also discussed the Johari Window and pointed out that in the feedback contained in your Expert Guides you will more than likely encounter feedback that is in your Unaware Area. We strongly encouraged you not to dismiss this feedback, but to test it through the self - awareness exercises which we will discuss later. Openness to feedback was emphasized as a key ingredient of personal development.
4. You were then given an article on brain plasticity. This article showed that the brain is highly plastic - it continues to evolve and form new connections. This supports research which shows that emotionally intelligent behavior can be learned.
5. We addressed the extremely important topic of developing new habits. The article you read covered the 3 R's of habit change. Probably the most important learning is to choose a habit that is incredibly easy to start. You were also encouraged to enrol for the Tiny Habits course.
To round off your preparation for your Leadership Journey, you will be looking at a very important concept:
Productive and Counterproductive behaviors associated with the 16 Personality Dimensions you were assessed on.
